How to Watch Netflix Overseas

VPN and Smart DNS Options

Working Around Regional Content Locks

Streaming content on demand is certainly the future of home entertainment.
Whilst traditional media delivery corporations, and movie rental companies, bemoan this and fight tooth and nail to try and retain viewers it is ultimately an unwinnable battle.

However, as with many things, the innovative and powerful change that the internet brings is met with the antiquated hang ups of geo-politics and Digital Rights Management. This leaves many parts of the world unable to enjoy access to the content.

But, with a little help, you could be accessing the latest content from Netflix or BBC iPlayer from anywhere in the world.

For most Expats a good VPN Service really should be “de rigueur” and one of the most important things to set up when arriving in a new country.
If you are an expat and do not yet have a VPN service set up, I would strongly advise you to set one up right away.
I have personal experience with many VPN companies, both paid and free, in my private and professional capacity in the last five years of living overseas.
Of all the services I strongly recommend OverPlay VPN who offer a great service starting at $4.95 a month.
Importantly with OverPlay, the SmartDNS service allows you to configure your home network to unlock access to geospecific content automatically.

You can get the whole thing up and running in less than 15mins with a few simple steps:

Sign up for an OverPlayVPN account with SmartDNS
Configure Smart DNS on your Router or Device
Sign up for a UK Netflix account
Download Netflix to your Games Console/TV/iPad/iPhone

Sign up for an OverPlayVPN account with SmartDNS

The first step is to sign up for a VPN account with SmartDNS, I recommend and the tutorial is written with this service in mind.
Simply follow this link, and sign up for a new account: Sign up

Once you have created an account you need to purchase a subscription.

There are two options here, either VPN and SmartDNS for $9.95, or SmartDNS only for $4.95

If you want to access sites not covered by the SmartDNS then you will need to choose the VPN option too.
If you only wish to access Netflix/iPlayer then the SmartDNS only subscription is fine.

Configure Smart DNS on your Router or Device
Once you have signed up for an account, the next step is to configure the SmartDNS settings on your home router or device.
The best option here is to configure the SmartDNS directly on your home router, this way any devices connected to your home network are automatically able to access the restricted content. However you can also choose to configure the settings on each individual device as required.

The first step is to log into your OverPlay account and configure your SmartDNS settings from the “My Account” page.

Here you can choose which region to set for Netflix. The USA has the biggest range of programming but there are some niche programs which are only available on the UK Netflix.
It is important to note that it doesn’t matter if we set the account as USA here and then open an account on Netflix UK, the account still works the same.

From this page you need to make note of the IP address given, highlighted above in the red box. This is the IP address we need to configure the device of router to use.

Next we need to log in to your router and apply these settings.

Your home router is usually accessible under the address http://router or but if not, you can find out the address by looking at your network connection settings.

Once you have logged in to your router you need to look for the DNS settings from the menu and then enter in the IP address from above in your Primary DNS, as here below:

Once you have updated the DNS settings, reboot the router for good measure.

Sign up for a UK Netflix account
Now that the router is configured to allow access to Netflix and other media streaming providers, we need to create a Netflix account by signing up here: Sign Up

A Netflix subscription is available in either USD or GBP depending on where you choose to sign up from. By setting your locale as UK in the Overplay SmartDNS above, you can create a subscription in UK £ for £5.99 a month which is actually slightly cheaper than a US account at $9.99 a month.

In any case, the first month is totally free, so try it for a month and if you don’t like it jsut be sure to cancel before the first payment is deducted!

Download Netflix to your Games Console/TV/iPad/iPhone
The service is available on most modern games consoles, Smartphones, Tablets, Smart TVs, and most device with web browser access.

Once you have configured the SmartDNS and signed up for a Netflix account we simply need to download the Netflix app onto your gaming console/iDevice/TV/Apple TV and log in.

And there you have it!
You can be watching the latest TV shows on your home TV within 15mins.
